Grandparenting during the summer months is always enjoyable and always changing. Why would I expect or want anything else?
Between the sporting practices/events and working, our grandkids are a blessing to have around. Though this summer has been different, there are some very similar aspects I’ve noticed over the years.
Coming Up with Projects for Our Grandkids
We love it whenever our grandkids are visiting. When they were little, we gave them little projects to do, and I worked with them to make sure they were entertained and happy. Sweeping the sidewalks, picking up twigs, planting flowers, and fun outdoor games were always a hit. I worked hard to get all of the grandkids together to participate in the festivities. It was important for me to provide them with time away from their parents and time together with all four of them.
This summer, we involved the grandkids in various yard projects. This year, our projects included trimming bushes and trees, placing dirt and rock at the foundation of our house, and helping out at the farm. Things were different this year because these were no longer jobs we created to keep them busy, moving and having a good time at Grandma’s. These were jobs we really needed help completing. Seems as though Grandpa and Grandma’s bodies aren’t as limber and forgiving as they once were.
When This Summer’s Project Turned Into a Fun Challenge
Moving the dirt and rock was probably the most physically challenging for all of us. While we directed traffic and gave orders, the grandkids began competing to see how much dirt they could load in the shortest amount of time. The tears of laughter came when the grandkids began curling buckets full of dirt. The competition was fierce. It wasn’t exactly American Ninja Warrior, but it was close. No one cared who won or lost because there was enough smack to go around to fill all of the buckets we had. No one could have curled those buckets!
I think the grandkids have enjoyed helping us with our projects, or at least I think they’ve enjoyed it. Maybe the lunch we provide them is really the most enjoyable aspect of our projects. Or just maybe it’s the time the grandkids have together that is the most meaningful.
This year, though, I was really surprised by their work ethic and strength. I thought we’d be teaching them about toil and sweat and satisfaction of completing a task. Instead, they impressed us and definitely outworked us! Here’s hoping others in their generation are as willing to work. It bodes well for our future.

Grandkids & Grandparents
I have four grandchildren ages 14-17. In some ways, I’m a very typical grandma, always proud of everything the kids do and wanting to help support them in whatever way I can. In other ways, I’m not very typical. My goal as a blogger is to share my thoughts and experiences that I think are funny and meaningful as I adventure through grandmahood.
