As we approach the holiday season, we tend to think of it as a time of enjoyment and festivities. But this time of year brings a great deal of stress! I have no doubt there will be many different disputes that couples will face in the weeks to come.

I have worked in the news business for the last five years, and as the holidays draw near the annual question remains; ”Will I have to work on Thanksgiving, Christmas or both?” News never stops, and it especially doesn’t during the holidays. Having young kids at home, I know that establishing family traditions is also important, especially for children at a young age. Family traditions vary a great deal and my family has changed those traditions many times over the years but we know the most important part is simply spending time together.

Holidays Can Be Challenging

Ever since Mitch and I got married we’ve tried to set aside a time to get together with his family in Grand Island, and mine, here in Lincoln. But when I work on the holidays setting a specific time and day to visit both sides of the family is challenging. The question we continue to try and answer is: ”Do we begin to make our own family traditions or try to schedule time with both families?”

Communication is Key

Communication is key with any relationship that remains true especially during the holidays. Mitch and I make sure we discuss holiday schedules with our families months in advance. Having our families involved in our children’s lives is important. We’ve come to understand that it doesn’t matter what day we come together to celebrate as long as we’re together.

Make Time for Your Family

Obviously, many families struggle to divide time amongst their relatives and extended family, but throw in the added stress and challenge of competing work schedule and the struggle is almost too much. My advice for new parents planning their children’s firsts is to make time for your family. Even though I work weird hours and some holidays, I realize that every day I get to spend time with my children is a day of thanks.

Luckily this year, our families are understanding and cooperative as always. Mitch and I figured out our holiday schedules and we get to spend time with both sides. It may not be on Nov. 27 or Dec. 25, but we celebrate as one big family and my children get to experience the holidays with love.

Babies & Toddlers

In addition to the time I devote to being a mom, I also work full-time outside the home, which means my day is hardly ever as simple as nine to five. With an all-too-established schedule, as soon as I walk through the door, my day doesn’t end, but rather just begins. It’s a balancing act, especially with two children, but being a mom is one full-time job that I never want to quit!
